Leviathan - Leviathan Series Book 1 - Scott Westerfeld (Illustrated by Keith Thompson)

Wednesday, March 9, 2016

In the world of an alternate history, experience adventure and excitement aboard the Leviathan in 1914, Europe.

About the Book:
It is the cusp of World War I. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam-driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ genetically fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship, and the most masterful beast in the British fleet. Aleksandar Ferdinand, a Clanker, and Deryn Sharp, a Darwinist, are on opposite sides of the war. But their paths cross in the most unexpected way, taking them both aboard the Leviathan on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure...One that will change both their lives forever. (From Amazon)

"Leviathan is like brain candy!"

My Thoughts:
I have never read anything like this before! It is the best of Historical and Science Fiction all rolled into one! My very dear friend, Wendy, recommended Leviathan to me. And she
couldn't have said it better when she told me, "Leviathan is like brain candy!" And I couldn't agree more. I picked this up and had a very hard time putting it down. Alas, adult responsibilities called to me, more specifically, my children. Such an enjoyable read, new discoveries on every page. The illustrations and descriptions were vivid and intriguing. I love history, and reading Leviathan, it was very easy to picture the time and the setting at the beginning of The Great War. There are enough true facts to make this a very realistic yet fantastical read (which Scott explains in the "Afterward"). My overactive, imaginative, mind had an absolute blast with this book! Scott Westerfeld's language is fun and unique. Forgive me, if in future posts, I terms like "squick" or "barking spiders" or (my personal favorite) "clever boots". Leviathan is classified as a Young Adult novel, but if you are an adult, love history AND Sci-Fi, then this is a book for you! And the best part is..There are TWO more books! I am excited to delve further into this world. Pick it up today and get lost in 1914, among Storm Walkers and Huxleys, Zeppelins and Flechette Bats, the Clankers and the Darwinists. This is an adventure you do not want to miss.
